Money Math
Money math and financial literacy for 3rd to 5th graders focuses on distinguishing needs from wants, understanding the basics of earning, saving, and budgeting, and introducing concepts like opportunity cost and interest. Key lessons involve setting financial goals, managing money through chores or allowance, and exploring the impact of advertising on spending.
Day 1: Understanding Money Basics
Focus: Identifying coins/bills, values, and counting money
- Recognize coins & bills and their values
- Count mixed coins and dollars
- Compare amounts (greater/less/equal)
- Project: Create a “Money Poster” showing coin values
Day 2: Adding & Subtracting Money
Focus: Real-life transactions
- Add and subtract money amounts (with decimals for 5th graders)
- Make change
- Estimate totals
Project: Run a mini classroom store
Day 3: Budgeting & Saving
Focus: Financial decision-making
- Needs vs. wants
- Simple budgeting
- Saving goals
- Project: Create a personal budget plan
Day 4: Earning, Spending & Real-World Math
Focus: Applying money math to life
- Understand earning (allowance/jobs)
- Multi-step word problems
- Unit pricing (intro for older students)
- Project: Plan a shopping trip within a budget
Day 5: Money Projects & Review
Focus: Synthesis and presentation
- Review key skills
- Apply all concepts in a final project
Option 1: Open a Business
- Lemonade stand, snack shop, toy store, etc.
- Decide:
- What they sell
- Prices
- Cost to run business
- Expected profit
Option 2: Plan a Dream Shopping Trip
- Given a budget (e.g., $100)
- Choose items from a catalog/menu
- Must:
- Stay within budget
- Calculate total cost
- Find change

- Budget (e.g., $500–$1,000 depending on level)
- Choose:
- Transportation

- Activities
Mrs. Aksoy is an experienced math teacher with over 10 years in education. She holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction Design and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education. Throughout her career, she has taught a wide range of courses from 4th grade math through Algebra 1, giving her a strong understanding of math curriculum progression and student learning at different levels.
She is deeply passionate about teaching and committed to helping students build confidence in math. Known for her patience and clear, supportive instruction, she focuses on breaking down complex concepts in ways that are accessible and meaningful for all learners. Her familiarity with curriculum design and data-driven instruction allows her to tailor lessons that meet diverse student needs and promote strong academic growth.
