SAT Critical Reading and Writing & Language

Mr. Davis will teach students a strategic method for approaching the SAT Critical Reading and SAT Writing & Language tests. In class, students will learn this strategic approach and repeatedly practice it using SAT tests released by the College Board. This crash course class will put students on the path to improved test-taking skills and improved results.

For Critical Reading, students will learn and practice how to actively read the various passages. Mr. Davis will teach students to recognize and capitalize on the patterns of each genre–literary, social sciences, and science–of the test, so they gain an advantage while reading. They will also learn how to use transitions, structural indicators, and parallelisms to train their brains to most effectively make meaning as they read. Additionally, they will proactively self-select and learn SAT vocabulary, which is a key to success on the test.

For Writing & Language, students will learn the most commonly tested topics, including transitions, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, commonly confused words, misplaced modifiers, and advanced punctuation as well as how to tackle the style and revision questions. In class, Mr. Davis will customize lessons to directly address the problems students miss on the test to bolster their grammar and mechanics in direct response to their incorrect answers.

Recommended Grades: 10-11

SAT Math

Gong, Ph.D.

Dr. Gong graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering. She has been teaching a wide range of high school level mathematics subjects at FBISD in recent years. She is currently the team leader for Algebra 2 and a mentor for new teachers. In addition, Dr. Gong has extensive experience teaching SAT Math and ISEE Math.

Dr. Gong is excited to be working with Momentum Learning. Her daughter attended several classes with Momentum Learning before and greatly improved her problem solving skills. Dr. Gong has a great passion for teaching. She enjoys engaging students and helping them make connections with real world applications.

Dr. Gong’s goal is to help students solve different levels of math problems and improve their mathematics knowledge and problem solving skills.

SAT Math PREP is an intensive 10-session, 30-hour comprehensive SAT Math program. Our program employs trainings and practices on all areas covered on a typical SAT test (refer to https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/whats-on-the-test/math/overview), which includes:

  • Heart of Algebra, which focuses on linear equations, systems of linear equations, and functions. These questions ask you to create equations that represent a situation, solve equations and systems of equations, and make connections between different representations of linear relationships.
  • Problem Solving and Data Analysis, which is about being quantitatively literate, including using ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning to solve problems in real-world situations, including science, social science, and other contexts. It also includes describing relationships shown graphically and analyzing statistical data
  • Passport to Advanced Math, which focuses on the math you’ll need to pursue further study in a discipline such as science or economics and for career opportunities in the STEM fields. It requires familiarity with more complex equations or functions, which will prepare you for calculus and advanced courses in statistics.
  • The Math Test also draws on Additional Topics in Math, including the geometry, trigonometry, radian measure, and complex numbers.

Recommended Grades: 10-11

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1, Geometry and preferably Algebra 2 as well
