Class Description: Number Sense is a mental math skill of using arithmetic techniques and brain power to solve math problems quickly. It involves mental computation, computational rounding, and computational estimation without using scratch paper or a calculator. Mental math proficiency is an important aspect of students’ math knowledge, especially for younger students. The speed and accuracy gained from these practices will help students do well in future math classes and math competitions.
Class Format: In each class, the teacher will cover a few Number Sense tricks. Students will get to practice a lot in class.
Topics
- Class 1 – Introduction, Foil, Squares / Square Root
- Class 2 – Decimal addition / subtraction (no trick), Multiply by 11, Multiply by 12
- Class 3 – Multiply by 15, Multiply by 25, Multiply by 50
- Class 4 – Multiply by 75, Multiply by 125, Squaring a two-digit number ending in 5
- Class 5 – Multiply by 101, Multiply by 111, Multiply by 1001
- Class 6 – Cubes / Cube Root, Halving And Doubling, Multiplying Two Numbers Over 100
